Ask Charlie: Please welcome Charlie to the CleanScapes family. Charlie's generation is learning early on about resource conservation and "green" issues so each month he'll bring you tips and answer questions about green products, waste diversion, reduction, and recycling.
    Q. Hey Charlie – How can I have a “zero waste” office?

    A. There really is no such thing as “zero waste.” After all even if you recycle, a truck still has to collect it and that takes fuel. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE garbage trucks - but my generation will focus on reduction:

    • Before recycling your office paper, make sure you have used both sides. And always use “print preview” so you only print what you want.

    • Be sure your staff uses durable mugs, plates, and silverware instead of paper products. You can even bring your own cloth napkin to work.

    • Implement a food waste collection program in your kitchen and teach people to wrap items in waxed paper instead of plastic. Since waxed paper is compostable, it becomes "Food for the Soil."

    • Don’t have garbage cans in each office. Instead, give everyone a container for co-mingled recycling and have people walk to a central trash can.

    • Almost all of an office’s waste is recyclable and most of the rest can be handled by a food waste program.

    • Your waste won’t shrink to “zero” but see how close you can get!
